Argentina's Story
After marrying and enrolling in school, Argentina’s life seemed full of promise. While seemingly supportive of her education goals, her husband sabotaged her attempts to succeed in school and Argentina reluctantly left school to care for her husband and home full-time.
Children followed but Argentina grew increasingly unfulfilled and depressed by her husband’s verbal abuse. With no support system, and in an attempt to conquer her depression and feelings of isolation, Argentina turned to using alcohol and drugs. Her children were removed from the house by ACS and placed into foster care.
After two unsuccessful attempts at substance abuse treatment, Argentina turned to WIN’s midtown clinic for help. WIN’s holistic, women-oriented approach to sobriety proved to be the right match for Argentina’s needs. Taking full advantage of all of WIN’s services, Argentina was able to regain custody of her youngest daughter, and enrolled her in WIN’s on-site childcare program where the little girl flourished.
With time Argentina was able to maintain sobriety and gain independence. Currently reunited with both children and in a supportive relationship, she is pursuing her educational goals and looks forward to a career as a medical technician.
Supporting WIN's pre-school, recreation and after-school programs enables mothers to work, so they can pay their bills and provide stable homes for their children.
The families that come to WIN need more than just a place to stay. Some of the women are survivors of domestic abuse, others have alcohol and substance abuse problems, many are trying to complete their education or develop job skills. And almost all are in desperate need of childcare services in order for them to go on job interviews, search for permanent housing or go to work.
