Shariba's Story
Born to parents who were addicted to drugs and alcohol, Shariba spent most of her life in foster care. She moved from home to home sometimes being physically, mentally, and verbally abused by her foster parents. The stress became too much and she rebelled, eventually being placed in a treatment facility for teens with behavioral issues.
When she became pregnant at 17, Shariba was placed with another foster family, but didn’t feel safe and ran away. On her own, she had 2 more children but was evicted from her small apartment and forced into the shelter system when she couldn’t pay the rent.
She was relieved to find life at Women In Need structured, clean and safe. With her children in WIN’s afterschool and recreation program, Shariba has taken full advantage of the many programs and classes available to her including nutrition, budgeting, resume building and job interview skills.
Shariba’s case worker has been a tremendous source of support during this difficult time offering guidance and support as she works to secure a job and a home for her children. She never knew a place like this existed but cannot imagine where she would be right now if not for Women In Need.
Supporting WIN's pre-school, recreation and after-school programs enables mothers to work, so they can pay their bills and provide stable homes for their children.
The families that come to WIN need more than just a place to stay. Some of the women are survivors of domestic abuse, others have alcohol and substance abuse problems, many are trying to complete their education or develop job skills. And almost all are in desperate need of childcare services in order for them to go on job interviews, search for permanent housing or go to work.
