WIN Families Learning About Health While Having Fun!

Women In Need held its annual Health Fair, and its first Family Day Festival, on Thursday, June 4, 2009. It was a day of fun and wellness for children and adults alike.

The Family Day Festival joined with the annual Health Fair and took place at WIN’s recently-completed playground funded by The Robin Hood Foundation and located at the Junius/Liberty Family Residences in East New York, Brooklyn.

Brooklyn Deputy Borough President Yvonne Graham was in attendance along with numerous community partners including Mobile Medical teams from NYU Kress Vision Center, Interfaith Medical Center, Neighborhood Health Providers, St. John’s Bread and Life Center, Montefiore Medical Center, Brooklyn AIDS Task Force, Kings County Smoking Cessation Program, Job Corps, Child Development Support Corporation, Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center and Catholic Immigration Office.

Health information was distributed on topics such as healthy eating, smoking cessation/free nicotine patches and gum, blood pressure, vision, podiatry, health insurance, HIV rapid testing and referrals for mammograms.

To keep things fun, raffles and prizes were distributed throughout the day and New York City-based band Autumn performed. The children were also busy watching a fabulous magic show by WIN volunteer Manny “the Magician” Alicandro, as well as sampling the treats in their special goody bags, and having their faces painted.

New WIN partners included Tom Lee of Amerikan Lyff Clothing Company who designed and donated t-shirts to the event and Tower Isle Beef Patties who donated delicious beef patties.
